Today I spoke with Dr. Manuel, the Assistant Dean of Admissions at the University of Cincinnati, about my idealistic future and how I can make this work. He was such a fun dean! First, he laughed at me, and I don't blame him. If someone called and rattled off how she wants to be a doctor, she wants to go to Ethiopia to volunteer for a year, and then she has already figured out 4 different ways to make it work so she is accepted into medical school I think you would laugh too. I was also very happy to make him laugh so early in the morning.
After our phone call, I was so excited that I wanted to tell mom and dad, Kyle, Emily, Emily & Amber, Angela, SOMEBODY...but of course everyone was at work, sleeping, busy, class. I have finally figured out what to do for the next year. I will be reapplying to UC, Early Decision, and then fly out to Addis Ababa mid- or late-September. I cannot believe this is actually happening. Dad gave me his full support, under one condition:
If I am accepted to medical school this summer for the fall, and the school will not allow me to defer a year - I must go to medical school and put Ethiopia on the back-burner.
Of course, if it's on the back-burner I will hopefully be able to go there for a few months next summer. However, I really feel that this is the right time in my life to do this. To step out of my comfort zone and do what I have always wanted to do: be of service to humanity.
