Strikes, Spares, and Funky Lanes

When I was at ICS playing Ultimate Frisbee, I met some pretty cool young adults who have been in Addis for a while.  They all live in the Sarbet area which is where Gavin and Linda live, and it’s where the school is located.  I found out there’s a 9-hole golf course near ICS and there is a new bowling alley!  After the NGO bazaar in January, Kyle, May, and I went to Gavin & Linda’s for the afternoon.  I love spending time with the Grant’s!  The kids make me happy and it’s great to have family over here.  May had to leave for children’s classes, but Kyle and I stuck around for dinner – which included babysitting Bahiyyih and Thomas while Gavin and Linda ran some errands.

Before dinner, Gavin took us to the new bowling alley and we checked it out.  It’s actually pretty nice!  Games are 23 birr and 5.75 birr for shoe rental.  All-in-all it’s a pretty great deal.  We decided to go back on Sunday with Galen and May.  As you well may know, I’m terrible at bowling.  Back at Case, Rex took me bowling once and taught me quite a bit…but I’ve never been able to fully implement his suggestions.  My hips get in the way, my wrists hurt from the weight of the ball (they lightest they had was 8 lbs. but I usually use a 6 lb. ball!), I release funny…basically everything’s wrong with my bowling technique.

I’m pretty sure the funniest thing that happened at the alley was that when the guy was having our scoreboard set up, he turned the language to Chinese.  Galen asked if there was English (which it had just been in)…and the guy said yes and changed it back to English.  I don’t really understand why we’re constantly being called “China! China!”.  None of us look Asian.  We speak English, so why did the guy change it to Chinese?  Ohhh Ethiopia, how I love thee so.

The first game we played, Kyle won with Galen a couple points below him, then May a few points below him, and finally meeee!  Granted, the points margin was 12…but I still felt like a loser.  I didn’t even break 100!  The second game, however, was a complete turnaround.  The whole time we were playing, the lane would shut off its power or wouldn’t give the right number of pins.  I realized that bowling takes longer in Ethiopia, but that’s totally fine with me.  The bowling alley also has wayyyy nicer chairs for you to sit in while you wait your turn.  Anyways, Kyle and I determined that our lane was really messed up.  You could get a gutter ball, but then randomly it would pop up at the end and take out up to 6 pins.  Ridiculous!  And although I’m really bad at bowling, I’m usually consistent.  However, on this lane I could do the same thing and it would do something totally different.  Or I’d try to change what I was doing, but the ball would end up doing the exact same thing.  I just don’t get it.  Oh well.

Anyways, the point is that our lane was funky.  And in our second game, guess who won.  ME!  HAHAHAHA  I somehow had two strikes and maybe a spare or two; I don’t even remember.  I just know I scored 118 and Kyle didn’t even break 100.  I love him to death, but this will probably be the only time I beat him at bowling so I have to live it up a little.  Of course, I have not gloated about it to him…only to Leo (who beat Kyle the last time we were bowling) and now to my lovely readers.

So here it is, once and for all: Jasmin 118 – Kyle 97.
